Project: Age-Friendly Cities and Barrier-Free Environments

  • Project (2017): Planning and Design for Age-Friendly Cities

Overview: This academic monograph integrates a decade of research on global aging trends and Taiwan’s urban-aging phenomenon, exploring how spatial planning can respond to the needs of older adults. Using the concept of active aging, it examines urban design strategies for creating human-centered, health-promoting, age-friendly cities. The book, published by Taylor & Francis, contains ten chapters (70,000–90,000 words) with case studies and original research, making it the first academic monograph to comprehensively address age-friendly cities from a spatial planning perspective.

  • Project (2013): Research on Barrier-Free Public Space Planning in Age-Friendly Communities
  1. Defined commonly used public spaces for older adults in Taiwan, including parks, sidewalks, community centers, and clinics.
  2. Developed a vision for barrier-free, age-friendly public spaces across communities.
  3. Created planning guidelines by reviewing literature, national policies, regulations, and international best practices in universal design and age-friendly urban development.
  4. Conducted empirical validation in Jinhua Village, Tainan City, analyzing older adults’ satisfaction with the environment and providing targeted improvement suggestions, which were integrated into the planning guidelines.
  • Supporting Local Governments in Age-Friendly City Initiatives

  • Project (2014): Pingtung County Age-Friendly City Continuation Plan

  2. Supported Pingtung County’s application to join the WHO Age-Friendly Network and coordinated interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Project (2014–2015): Chiayi City Health and Age-Friendly City Continuation Plan

  1. Conducted follow-up surveys and analyses of previous implementations and community engagement.
  2. Assisted Chiayi City in presenting outcomes through websites and public presentations, monitoring the effectiveness of current age-friendly city initiatives.
